PERSONAL ANGLE

This section is about people in motorsport, news from paddocks and light-hearted comments. Carol Corliss, our Editor for this Personalities section, has been in and around Vintage/Historic events since the early sixties as a competitor, official and writer. For some years she was responsible for the design of V.S.C.C., exhibition stands and along with Donald Day, well known E.R.A., competition driver, led the team that constructed and manned the stands at large events. She has owned and driven her own 1929 1750 Alfa Romeo for over 30 years and remains as enthusiastic as ever about the people and the cars that make up the sport. Spends whatever spare time she can manage abstract painting. Ladies and Gentlemen - Personal Angle! To email us click here

Steve O'Rourke (20 Nov 2003)

This is a bad week for reporting the demise of members of the historic racing fraternity. However the events at the funeral of Steve O'Rourke who died recently do have a lighter side. With kind permission of Richard Kay of the Daily Mail, I reproduce his report.

Quote; STEVE O'ROURKE - the manager of Pink Floyd - who died last month certainly had a funeral fit for an old rocker. The 63-year-old had a send off that could have come from a heavy metal spoof movie Spinal Tap.

THE GLAMOUR & GRIT OF ROSEMARY SMITH - A Career In Rallying - 20 Apr 2004
The photogenic and much photographed female star of the highly successful Rootes Rally Team, Rosemary Smith was, during the 60s, an icon to an army of fans of the sport and won countless awards during this time. It was an exhilarating, heady time for any young woman and I could not resist finding out during a recent weekend encounter, just how she had made her way to the pinnacle of the sport.

Born into a middle class family in Ireland, Rosemary was no tomboy. She was in fact a very feminine little girl who loved party dresses and all of the "Girly" pastimes. Her father was, however, a very sporty type who encouraged her to ride ponies and to play golf. He was himself an accomplished player who was on 12 handicap and played for Leinster.
Carol Corliss Looks Into The Way Hall & Hall Go Historic Racing - 01 Feb 2004
One of the most respected names in the world of historic racing, Hall & Hall, specialise is restoring and race preparation of historic racing and sports cars. Rick Hall along with erstwhile partner Rob Fowler started the business back in 1978 when they left the failing firm of BRM and were charged with restoring a V16 followed by an H16 and then an avalanche of BRMs.
One Man & His Motor Racing - Tim Parnell - 23 May 2002
Reg Parnell was one of the great characters of pre and post-war motor racing in Britain. He raced mainly as a privateer from his Highfields Garage business in Derby but was on occasions to be seen in works cars such as Aston Martin. It was not easy to compete on the continent in the aftermath of the second World War as it was not permitted to take currency abroad and racing anywhere was and still is an expensive business. Most of the people who helped to shape what was to become the British domination of the sport in the 60's had to resort to some fairly imaginative means of being where the action was and had they not done so, the glorious successes of Vanwall, B.R.M., Lotus etc might never have come about. Reg did compete quite frequently abroad and kept the flag flying for this country, often the only British entrant.
Barrie (Whizzo) Williams - 22 Apr 2002
Barrie was literally born into a motoring family, his Father Frank (Usually known as Tony) had raced motorcycles in the 30's and had in fact broken his back in the Isle of Man during that period. He was strongly supported by his friend "Uncle" Bill Walker, Barrie's Godfather and Wife Kay in his ventures. They owned a garage at Bromyard, Herefordshire which was the H.Q. of their activities. The family went to early events at Shelsley, Prescott etc., where the lad soon became addicted to burnt Castrol "R"
