What is the difference between a Subaru Forester and a Subaru Outback?

When it comes to popular vehicles in the Subaru line-up, the Forester and Outback certainly top the list. Both vehicles share similarities, such as easy handling and a number of safety features, and both are all wheel drive vehicles. However, they also share differences when it comes to factors such as engine size, fuel economy and style. Today, we’re taking a look at some of the differences between the Subaru Forester and the Subaru Outback.

Subaru Forester

The Subaru Forester offers real-world practicality and is the perfect size to allow your family to enjoy your lifestyle. In fact, the Forester was runner up in the 2019 Wheels Car of the Year Awards. The Forester is a more compact option compared to the Outback but boasts plenty of interior space with reduced road noise and rich interior design. Compared to the Forester, you’ll also ride slightly higher which some drivers prefer. Keyless access to the car makes things much easier when you’re juggling kids and luggage and the quick, hands-free powered rear tailgate adds to the ease of use.

The Forester utilises the next generation 2.5L Direct Injection horizontally opposed Boxer engine with improved fuel efficiency and uses the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive System. When it comes to aesthetics, the Forester looks more like an SUV compared to the Outback and it’s available with a number of accessories to increase the convenience and usability of the vehicle.

Subaru Outback

The Subaru Outback is a favourite for families across Australia and offers a larger vehicle compared to the Forester. With the longer wheelbase, it offers a smooth ride and you can barely feel bumps on the road. It also has a larger backseat than the Forester which can be an advantage if you have multiple children or larger teenagers. The additional size of the Outback makes it a great option if you tend to go on longer journeys. The larger size also means that it’s more expensive than the Forester.

The Outback offers power and performance each time you set out on the road with the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive System and horizontally opposed Boxer engine. The Outback also features a maximum towing capacity of 2,700 lbs – if you need to tow heavy things around, the Outback is probably the best choice!
